1939 - Britain goes to war
When Hitler's armies invaded Poland - war engulfed Europe. The British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain used the BBC to tell the people that Britain was at war with Germany. The BBC was now part of the war effort.
1937 - The Hindenburg disaster
American reporter Herb Morrison took a prototype radio van to watch the airship the Hindenburg coming in to land. His words as he witnessed the subsequent tragedy became some of the most famous in broadcasting history.
1977 - Punks make waves
Punk was sweeping the UK. This subculture was embodied by the Sex Pistols, a band that swore, spat and mocked the establishment. It's not surprising that their silver jubilee hit God Save the Queen was banned by the BBC.
1980 - Who Shot JR?
Dallas, the American TV series about Texan oilmen and their families had ended on a cliffhanger. Viewers around the world were obsessed by the mystery of who shot the main character, JR Ewing. In the United States, there were even questions from the government.

WORLD WAR II FACTS
Finland signs U.S.S.R. peace treaty in 1940. V-2 rocket developed by the Germans during WW2. Pearl Harbor bombed on November 27, 1941. 16,354,000 WW2 casualties (killed, wounded, or diseased) President Roosevelt requested $1.8 Billion dollars for national defense and $1.2 billion for producing 50,000 planes a year then requests $ 1.2 billion more. 1941-Government persuades women to take jobs during World War II. Almost 7 million women responded, 2 million as industrial "Rosie the Riveters" and 400,000 joining the military. President Roosevelt died two weeks before the German surrender.
